Hyaluronic Acid (Oral)

Best known as a topical skincare ingredient, but a growing body of randomized trials shows oral supplementation improves skin hydration and reduces wrinkle depth from within.

✓ Improves skin hydration ✓ elasticity and wrinkle depth in randomized trials; supports joint comfort; effects build over 8-12 weeks

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found throughout the body's connective tissue, skin and joints, prized for its extraordinary capacity to bind water — a single HA molecule can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Skin HA content declines noticeably with age, contributing to the loss of hydration, volume and elasticity associated with visibly aging skin. It's widely known as a topical and injectable (dermal filler) ingredient, but oral supplementation has a growing, distinct evidence base of its own.

Oral Supplementation Evidence

Multiple randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials — including studies published in Scientific Reports and the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology — have found that oral HA supplementation measurably improves skin hydration, elasticity, smoothness and reduces wrinkle depth over 8-to-12-week periods, distinct from and complementary to any topical routine. This oral evidence base has expanded substantially, addressing earlier skepticism about whether an orally ingested large polysaccharide molecule could meaningfully affect skin — the current trial data suggests low-molecular-weight formulations are absorbed well enough to have a measurable systemic effect.

Joint Health

Separately from skin research, oral HA has a longer-standing evidence base for joint comfort and lubrication, particularly in knee osteoarthritis, making it one of the few "anti-aging" supplements with meaningfully overlapping cosmetic and structural/joint benefit.

Dosing Guidelines

  • Typical studied range: 120–240mg daily of low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid
  • Look for: molecular weight specified on the label — lower-molecular-weight forms are generally better absorbed orally than high-molecular-weight HA
  • Effects build gradually over 8–12 weeks of consistent daily use, consistent with trial durations
  • Very well tolerated — few reported side effects in trials to date
