What to Actually Pack for Your First Retreat

Clothing: Comfort and Modesty First

Loose, comfortable layers that allow easy movement (for yoga or walking meditation) and cover shoulders and knees are the safe default across most retreat traditions -- many centres, particularly Buddhist and Ayurvedic ones, have specific modesty expectations worth checking in advance rather than assuming.

What NOT to Bring

Strong perfumes or scented products are discouraged at many meditation centres out of consideration for shared spaces; valuables and anything you'd be anxious about losing are best left at home given basic shared-room storage at many venues.

Practical Comfort Items

A journal (useful even at silent retreats, for writing rather than reading), a reusable water bottle, any specific medication clearly labelled, and a light layer for early-morning cold at high-altitude locations are commonly under-packed essentials.

What About Your Phone?

Confirming the retreat's specific device policy before packing avoids either an unwelcome surprise or unnecessarily leaving a phone behind if it turns out to be permitted during breaks.

The One Thing People Forget

A cushion or light meditation support (if you have a preference) and any personal comfort item for extended sitting are easy to forget but genuinely useful on longer, more demanding retreats -- most centres provide basics, but not always to everyone's preference.
