What is Fish Oil / Omega-3?

Fish oil is an oil derived from the tissues of oily fish — primarily salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring, and anchovies. It is one of the richest sources of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) — the two long-chain omega-3 fatty acids that drive the majority of fish oil health benefits.

These are distinct from ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) — the plant-based omega-3 found in flaxseed and walnuts. The human body converts ALA to EPA and DHA very inefficiently (under 5%), making direct dietary or supplemental sources of EPA and DHA essential for optimal health.

The Omega-6:Omega-3 Imbalance

The ancestral human diet had an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of approximately 4:1. The modern Western diet, dominated by processed foods and industrial seed oils (soybean, sunflower, corn oil), has a ratio of 15:1 to 20:1. This profound imbalance shifts the body toward a chronically pro-inflammatory state at the cellular membrane level — a central driver of heart disease, cognitive decline, autoimmunity, and metabolic disease.

Restoring omega-3 balance is one of the highest-impact nutritional interventions available, and fish oil supplementation is the most practical way to achieve it.

Research-Backed Benefits

Telomere Preservation

A landmark study published in JAMA (2010) followed 608 patients with coronary artery disease for five years and found that those with the highest omega-3 blood levels had telomere shortening rates 2.5 times slower than those with the lowest levels. Telomere length is one of the most direct biological markers of cellular aging.

Cardiovascular Protection

The REDUCE-IT trial found that high-dose EPA (4g daily) reduced major cardiovascular events by 25% in high-risk patients. Omega-3s reduce triglycerides, lower blood pressure, reduce arterial inflammation, improve endothelial function, and reduce risk of sudden cardiac death.

Brain Health and Cognitive Longevity

DHA accounts for approximately 40% of the polyunsaturated fatty acids in the brain and is essential for neuronal membrane function. Higher blood DHA levels are consistently associated with larger brain volume, better memory performance, and reduced risk of dementia. DHA supplementation has been shown to slow cognitive decline in APOE4 carriers — the primary genetic risk factor for Alzheimer disease.

Anti-Inflammatory Resolution

EPA and DHA are precursors to specialised pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) — resolvins, protectins, and maresins — that actively resolve inflammation and restore tissue homeostasis. This is a fundamentally different mechanism from anti-inflammatory drugs, which merely block inflammatory signals without resolving them.

Choosing the Right Fish Oil

  • Form: Triglyceride (rTG) form offers up to 70% better absorption than ethyl ester (EE) form
  • Dose: Look for 2-3g of combined EPA + DHA daily — not total fish oil
  • Purity: IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards) certification guarantees testing for heavy metals, PCBs, and oxidation
  • Freshness: TOTOX value under 26; fresh fish oil smells oceanic, not fishy
  • Sustainability: MSC certification for sustainably sourced fish
