Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a golden-yellow spice from the ginger family, native to South and Southeast Asia, that has been central to Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for over 4,000 years. The active compound responsible for most of its health benefits is curcumin — a polyphenol that gives turmeric its distinctive colour and accounts for approximately 2-5% of dried turmeric root by weight.
Curcumin is one of the most extensively studied natural compounds in modern medicine, with over 3,000 peer-reviewed studies published to date. It has been shown to influence over 700 genes and interact with dozens of molecular targets — making it a genuinely multi-pathway therapeutic agent rather than a single-mechanism supplement.
Curcumin works by inhibiting NF-kB — the master transcription factor that switches on inflammation at the cellular level. Chronic NF-kB activation is a core driver of virtually every major age-related disease including heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer disease, and type 2 diabetes. Unlike ibuprofen and other NSAIDs, curcumin inhibits inflammation through multiple pathways simultaneously without damaging the gut lining.
